I Campi Flegrei sono un luogo di eccezionale rilevanza per le strutture ipogee antiche. Oltre a cavità assai famose, che hanno una rinomanza straordinaria per gli aspetti mitologici, letterari, archeologici e storici, ve ne sono moltissime altre ancora da scoprire e documentare a fondo. E’ anche importante non limitarsi a vederle come singoli elementi di particolarità, ma riconoscerne le relazioni fra di loro e con le strutture antiche di superficie. Le cavità sotterranee sono spesso luoghi conservativi, da cui è possibile ricavare informazioni relative alle strutture di superficie non più esistenti.

The Phlegraean Fields lie in a volcanic caldera laced with caves famous from mythological, literary and historical writings. They are located on the Bay of Naples 20 kilometers west of Naples, Italy.
During Roman times, the Phlegraean Fields supported palatial villas, an active harbor, and were home to the Imperial Fleet, leaving them exceptionally rich in ancient underground structures… many of which are yet to be discovered, let alone documented. These underground spaces are not only interesting in their own right but often remain untouched from ancient times, providing valuable information about surface structures that no longer exist.
